Homecoming 2015

 Campus Decs

The first skit I watched was a performance by Alpha Chi Omega, Delta Chi and Tau Kappa Epsilon. They depicted Truman as a fisherman near a bait shop, trying to avoid the sneaky University of Florida gator that was stopping Truman from being successful at catching any fish. During the skit, I met up with my friend, a Mizzou senior, who was excited to show her parents and brother what Mizzou Homecoming is all about during her last year on campus. Her family was visiting from Nebraska for the weekend.

I began my homecoming weekend by visiting Campus Decorations in Greek Town. I spent time with a recent alumna who made the trip from St. Louis to celebrate the 104th homecoming with her sister, a friend of mine and a current Mizzou freshman. As I walked around the sorority and fraternity houses, it was remarkable to see the masses of people spending their evening admiring the creativity of the decorations.  Greek Town was transformed into a lively hub for alumni, students, their families and community members in a matter of days. To me, it was a visual reminder of the spirit and strength of the Mizzou family.

We all agreed it was fun to see the groups of many children watching and interacting by the skit stage in front of the large crowd of students and alumni. The kids were able to take part in the skit by using small fishing rods to help Truman, and that interactive element made Mizzou Homecoming meaningful to them. Many other decorations and skits incorporated fun, kid-friendly activities and even photo ops.

Over a few hours, I viewed other skits and decorations that were related to the 2015 theme “Truman Goes to Work”, presenting him as a rock star, news anchor, archaeologist and so much more. On the crisp, cool fall night, the Campus Decs festivities were both exciting for me as a current student, while also being family-friendly and engaging to future Mizzou Tigers.
